Removing Hardened Concrete from Mixers and Truck Drums with the TIGER 8 BREAKER

USING THE TIGER 8 BREAKER IN CONCRETE PLANTS

Customer Profile:

Ready-mix concrete producers that run their own batching plants and fleets of concrete mixer trucks.

Objective:

To clean the concrete that has set inside plant mixers and truck drums, bring the equipment back to full capacity, and do it without damaging the drum shell or the mixing blades.

Main challenges the customers were facing:

  • Concrete build-up: After each delivery a thin layer stays on the drum walls and blades. Layer after layer, it hardens into a solid crust.
  • Lost capacity and dead weight: The crust takes volume from the drum and adds weight to every trip the truck makes.
  • Slow manual cleaning: Sledgehammers and hand chisels inside a confined drum are slow and exhausting, and the truck or mixer stays out of service longer.
  • Electrical risk: Electric tools and cables inside a wet steel drum are a real safety concern.

SET MAKINA’s Solution

The customers use the TIGER 8 BREAKER, a pneumatic jack hammer originally built for quarries and mines. Key benefits:

  • Light enough to work inside the drum: 8.7 kg and 430 mm long, so one operator can handle it at awkward angles.
  • Air-powered, no cable in the drum: It runs on a standard 6 bar air supply (0.73 m³/min), from the plant compressor or a small portable one.
  • No hydraulic oil: Nothing can leak into the mixer and contaminate the next batch.
  • Two chisel types: The pointed chisel breaks thick lumps. The flat chisel, held at a shallow angle, lifts the last layer off the steel without gouging it.
  • Enough impact for set concrete: About 25 N·m at 1,680 blows per minute.

Good practice: Stop and lock out the drum drive before anyone enters, ventilate the drum, and wear eye, ear and hand protection.
